This image is about a number of different bonds that help to form a community. Language is of course a major mechanism that gives a community a sense of self. The text "mother tongue" is intended to make that clear, the hands are also language. As an example, the deaf community has a long history of association with this community center and the central image is the generic "I love you" sign in American Sign Language. The woman and child's hands that make this image were not made from a photograph, instead they just placed their hands on the scanner. |
