from "voice over . . ." at Dovercourt Community Center in Ottawa |
This image has three elements the pool, a generic "group photo" and some text. Communities can be vague things - bound by geography, language, economic concerns or any number of factors. They are very fluid - a state of mind contingent on your self identification in relation to a larger group. We declare to ourselves that we either "belong" or " do not belong" to a particular community - and that is what this picture is about. The eight images in this series are fairly small inkjet prints matted and framed and displayed in the main lobby of the community center. The interior of the center is modern in appearance and is visually rather chaotic (the walls are covered with notices etcetera). The site for the images is a "quiet" bit of wall kept free of visual riprap for the purposes of the work. The entire installation takes about 12 feet of space and requires a close approach to view. It was intentionally made small to avoid a visually "dominating" image that would be seen to govern the space (and eventually be resented. . .) |
